2021 P1 Q5 - Comparing Bond Energy and Bond Length for Hydrocarbons
Let Chemistry Guru, Singapore's top choice for JC Chemistry tuition, guide you through 2021 A Levels H2 Chemistry Paper 1 Question 5.
We want to compare bond energy and bond length of carbon-carbon bond for C2H6, C2H4 and C2H2.
Let Chemistry Guru, Singapore's top choice for JC Chemistry tuition, guide you through the comparison.
In ethane (C2H6) there is a carbon-carbon single bond which is the weakest, hence lowest bond energy and longest bond length.
In ethyne (C2H2) there is a carbon-carbon triple bond which is the strongest, hence highest bond energy and shortest bond length.
Therefore from C2H6 to C2H2, we expect bond energy to increase and bond length to decrease (option C).
