A Level Chemistry 2017 Paper 1 Question 18 Solution - Exclusive
In this exclusive video we want to discuss the suggested solution for A Levels Chemistry (H2 Chemistry) 2017 Paper 1 Question 18.
Let Chemistry Guru, Singapore's top JC Chemistry tuition centre, guide you through this question:
The topic tested in this question is on Alkenes, in particular the electrophilic addition of HBr.
1. Determine number of products which are tertiary bromoalkanes
Since we are adding an asymmetrical reagent HBr to an asymmetrical alkene, we will have 2 different products for each alkene depending on which carbon the bromine is attached to.
Since we have 2 of such alkenes in the compound, the total number of possible products will be 4.
From the products drawn we can determine we have 3 products with tertiary bromoalkanes.
2. Determine molecular formula of product
All the products will have the same molecular formula so we just need to use any of the product to figure out the molecular formula.
From this product drawn we can count that there are 26 hydrogen so the molecular formula is C15H26Br2.
We can finally combine both deductions and conclude that the answer to this question is D.
